Trans-Atlantic kayaker reaches Port Canaveral, just days away from New Smyrna

PORT CANAVERAL — Appearing weather-beaten but determined, trans-Atlantic kayaker Aleksander “Olek” Doba paddled into Port Canaveral on Thursday night and vowed he will be in New Smyrna Beach within days.

Culminating a journey that began more than six months ago in Portugal, the 67-year old Polish explorer navigated choppy waves in his 21-foot kayak off Port Canaveral and joked he might have something to share with those who show up to greet him.

“He said he has enough food to share some of the leftovers with people in New Smyrna Beach,” said Piotr Chmielinski, translating for Doba -- who speaks little English -- as Doba answered a reporter's question.

Doba still has weeks' worth of food stored in his kayak named “Olo.”

Just before dusk Thursday, Chmielinski chartered a 36-foot fishing boat and took along a News-Journal reporter and photographer, as well as a Polish television crew, to briefly rendezvous with Doba offshore.

Doba has paddled more than 5,000 miles, at times fending off powerful storms as he crossed the Atlantic Ocean. His expedition began Oct. 5 in Lisbon, Portugal, and he was forced to stop at one point to make repairs in Bermuda.

Friday morning, he plans to enter the Port Canaveral Lock, which allows small boats to pass from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian River. He will make his way through the Intracoastal Waterway to New Smyrna Beach, likely arriving at the city's marina on Riverside Drive in the next couple of days – if the weather cooperates.

“He said he's very tired because for the last three nights he didn't sleep with the crossing of the Gulf Stream,” Chmielinski said, translating Doba's comments.
